What digital marketing actually is
Digital marketing is the full set of activities through which a business promotes itself and interacts with customers via digital channels: search engines, social media, email, websites and online advertising.
The fundamental difference from traditional marketing (TV, radio, print, flyers) is that every action can be measured. You know exactly how many people saw your ad, how many clicked, how many bought and how much each new customer cost.
If a potential customer searches for ‘restaurant in Cluj’ and you appear neither on Google Maps, nor on Google Search, nor on Facebook, then as far as they are concerned your business does not exist. Digital marketing changes that.
Digital marketing channels: explained simply
There is no single ‘digital marketing’: there are several channels, each with its own logic and advantages. Here are the main ones:
How to choose the right channel for your business
The classic mistake Romanian entrepreneurs make is to be present everywhere but weak everywhere. One excellent channel beats six mediocre ones.
The formula for the right choice: Intent + Visuals + Budget
Restaurant in Bucharest: Meta Ads (food photos = perfect visuals) + Google Maps SEO (people search for ‘restaurant Bucharest’) + Facebook remarketing for people who have visited the website.
Dental clinic: Google Ads (direct intent: ‘dentist Cluj’) + local SEO + email marketing for existing patients (check-up reminders).
B2B supplier (e.g. building materials): LinkedIn Ads + Google Ads for specific searches + email marketing for the active client portfolio.
- Products/services with clear intent (people actively search for them) → Google Ads + SEO
- Visual products/services (food, design, fashion, tourism) → Meta Ads (Facebook + Instagram)
- B2B clients (companies, managers, directors) → LinkedIn Ads + email marketing
- Limited budget → organic SEO + content on 1-2 well-chosen social networks
- Medium-to-large budget → a combination of Google Ads + Meta Ads + email
What digital marketing costs in Romania: real figures
One of the questions we hear most often: ‘How much do I need to start with?’ The answer depends on your objectives and industry, but here are realistic benchmarks for 2026:
The figures below are the paid advertising budget (ad spend), separate from the cost of an agency or freelancer. An advertising budget of 1,000 RON/month that is badly managed can bring zero results. The same budget, managed professionally, can bring 15-40 new customers.
- Micro-business (under 10 employees): 800-2,000 RON/month ad spend. Focus on 1 main channel.
- Active SME (10-50 employees): 2,000-8,000 RON/month ad spend. Google Ads and Meta Ads running at the same time.
- Company in aggressive growth: 10,000+ RON/month. Omnichannel: Google + Meta + LinkedIn + email + SEO.
- Romanian marketing agency cost: 1,500-5,000 RON/month management fee, depending on the number of channels and the complexity.
- Freelance marketer cost: 800-2,500 RON/month per channel. Cheaper, less scalable.
The maths is simple: if a new customer brings you 500 RON in profit on average and you spend 1,500 RON on marketing, you need at least 3 new customers/month to break even. With the right channels, a budget of 1,500 RON can bring 10-20 new customers.

Work out the right budget →7 mistakes Romanian entrepreneurs make with digital marketing
1. Marketing without a working website
You send 1,000 people to your website, but it takes 8 seconds to load on mobile and has no clear CTA. You lose 80% of the traffic. Your website is the foundation: everything else brings people there.
2. Copying the competition without understanding why
If your competitor advertises on TikTok, that does not mean it works for them. They may be losing money and doing it out of inertia. Decide on the basis of data, not imitation.
3. Changing strategy every 2 weeks
Google Ads needs 4-6 weeks for the algorithm to learn. SEO needs 3-6 months. If you change direction after 2 weeks, you keep starting from zero and never collect enough data.
4. Measuring nothing concrete
‘We have more visibility’ is not a KPI. How many enquiries? How many sales? How much did each new customer cost? Without figures, you cannot tell whether your marketing works or you are throwing money away.
5. A marketing budget, but zero production budget
You spend 2,000 RON on ads, but the product photos were taken on a phone in poor light. The ads bring people to the website, but weak visuals do not convert. Investing in professional photography/video pays for itself quickly.
6. No patience with SEO
SEO is the investment with the best long-term ROI, but it takes 6-12 months to deliver the first significant results. Those who give up at 3 months stop just when things would have started to work.
7. Running ads without dedicated landing pages
You send people from Google Ads straight to the homepage instead of a dedicated page carrying the exact message from the ad. Every campaign should lead to a page built specifically for that campaign (a landing page); otherwise conversion rates are 3-5x lower.
Where to begin if you are starting from zero
Step 1 is not running ads. Step 1 is the foundation:
- A working website: fast, mobile-friendly, with clear contact details and a visible CTA on every page
- Google Business Profile: essential for any local business. It puts you on Google Maps.
- Analytics set up correctly: Google Analytics 4 installed, conversions defined (calls, forms, sales)
- 1 well-chosen social profile: Facebook or Instagram, not both done badly. Consistent content 3x/week.
Only once the foundation is solid do you bring in paid advertising. Doing it in the wrong order means wasted money.
Frequently asked questions
What is digital marketing?
Digital marketing is the full set of activities that promote a brand, product or service through digital channels: search engines (Google), social media (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn), email, websites and online advertising. Unlike traditional marketing, its results can be measured precisely.
How much money do I need for digital marketing?
A realistic budget for a small or medium-sized business in Romania is 1,500-5,000 RON/month for paid ads (Google Ads + Meta Ads), plus the cost of an agency or freelancer. SMEs with a limited budget can start with 800-1,500 RON/month and increase it as they see results.
What is the best digital marketing channel for restaurants?
For restaurants, the optimal combination is: Facebook + Instagram Ads (strong visuals), Google Ads for direct intent (restaurant + city) and local SEO for Google Maps. The budget is split 50% Meta Ads, 30% Google Ads, 20% SEO.
How long does it take to see results?
Paid ads (Google Ads, Meta Ads) can deliver results within 2-4 weeks. Organic SEO needs 3-6 months for the first significant results. Social media generates awareness immediately, but real conversions come after 1-3 months of consistent activity.
Do I need an agency, or can I do it myself?
It depends on your resources and time. A dedicated person can handle marketing in-house with the right training. The advantages of an agency: a specialised team, access to premium tools, experience with similar clients. Our recommendation: an agency for paid channels (Google/Meta Ads), in-house for organic social media.
