What AIO and GEO are, and why they matter in 2026
In 2024, Google launched AI Overviews: AI-generated summaries that appear above the classic organic results for millions of queries. At the same time, platforms such as Perplexity, ChatGPT Search and Gemini have become alternative search engines with hundreds of millions of users.
The result? A new discipline has taken shape: AIO (AI Overview Optimisation) or GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation), the practice of optimising content so that it is cited and referenced by AI-powered search engines.
AIO = optimising to appear in Google's AI-generated summaries. GEO = optimising to be cited by any generative AI engine (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude). The core strategy is similar, but the technical nuances differ.
How LLMs think when selecting sources
Before you optimise, you need to understand how it works. LLMs (Large Language Models) don't crawl the web in real time for every answer: they combine pre-trained knowledge with dynamic retrieval (on platforms with web search enabled).
When a model with web search (ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) selects sources, it follows roughly this logic:
- Semantic relevance: the content answers the user's question directly, rather than just including the keywords
- Topical authority: the site is known as a reference source in its field (not necessarily a high DA)
- Clear structure: descriptive H2/H3 headings, lists, tables, direct answers to questions
- E-E-A-T: evidence of Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness
- Freshness: content updated recently or explicitly marked with recent dates
- Citability: clear sentences, facts backed by data, statistics, precise definitions
LLMs prefer content that directly answers questions, not content that “stalls” the answer. If your title promises “How to do X”, the first paragraph must give the short answer, and the rest of the article should explain it in detail.
The complete AIO/GEO strategy in 5 steps
1. AI visibility audit
The first step is to understand where you stand now. Test manually or with specialised tools (Semrush AI Toolkit, Authoritas, Accio) which queries in your niche trigger AI Overviews and which sources get cited.
2. Identify the citable questions
Not all content is eligible for an AI Overview. The focus is on informational queries with clear intent: definitions, comparisons, how-tos, lists, explanations. Transactional queries (buy, price, order) are rarely included in an AI Overview.
3. Restructure your content for citability
Before (not citable): “Email marketing is a valuable method of communicating with customers that can deliver significant results if implemented correctly...”
After (citable): “Email marketing generates an average ROI of $42 for every $1 invested (DMA, 2025). The main types of email campaign are: welcome series, abandoned cart, post-purchase, newsletter and re-engagement.”
4. Implement Schema.org markup
Schema.org helps AI engines understand the structure and context of your content. The essential types for AIO:
{
"@type": "Article",
"speakable": {
"@type": "SpeakableSpecification",
"cssSelector": ["h1", ".article-lead", "h2"]
},
"FAQPage": { ... }, /* for FAQ sections */
"HowTo": { ... } /* pentru tutoriale step-by-step */
}
5. Build topical authority
A good article isn't enough. LLMs prefer sources that cover a topic completely: not a single article, but a cluster of interconnected content. Recommended strategy: 1 pillar page + 8-12 cluster articles on adjacent topics.

Request the audit →E-E-A-T applied to AIO
Google added the second “E” (Experience) to E-E-A-T in 2022, and in 2026 it matters more than ever. LLMs favour content that demonstrates real hands-on experience, not theory.
- Experience: Include data from real projects, not just generic information. “From analysing 50 accounts...” > “It is important to...”
- Expertise: An author identified by name, job title, bio and profile links (LinkedIn, publications)
- Authoritativeness: Cited in other publications, links from authoritative sources in the field
- Trustworthiness: Clear contact details, a privacy policy, update dates visible on every article
AIO-optimised content structure
The ideal structure of an article optimised for LLMs:
H1: [Direct answer to the main intent] Intro paragraph: short answer (2-3 sentences) Visible publication + update date H2: What is [the term]: a clear definition → definition in 1-2 quotable sentences H2: [Main components/types/steps] H3: Component 1 + explanation H3: Component 2 + explanation → Liste numerotate sau cu bullets H2: [How to implement/apply it] → Clear, numbered steps → Exemple concrete cu date H2: [Common mistakes / What to avoid] H2: FAQ (Schema FAQPage) → 3-5 exact questions from Search Console Conclusion: actionable summary
Technical implementation: the complete checklist
- Title tag: include the exact question you want to appear for in AIO
- Meta description: a direct answer within the first 150 characters
- Schema.org Article with speakable CSS selectors on the H1 and lead paragraph
- Schema.org FAQPage for question sections
- Publication and update date markup (datePublished + dateModified)
- Author with Person/Organization Schema markup
- Internal linking to cluster articles on the same topic
- Sourced statistics and data, with external links to studies
- Images with descriptive, complete alt text
- Page speed under 2s LCP (Core Web Vitals)
How to measure AIO success
AI visibility doesn't show up in Google Search Console (yet). Metrics to monitor:
Traffic from Perplexity and ChatGPT appears in GA4 as direct or referral traffic, not as organic. Set up UTM filters or custom segments in GA4 to track it correctly.
- Referral traffic from perplexity.ai, chat.openai.com, bard.google.com in GA4
- CTR in Search Console for queries that trigger an AI Overview
- Weekly manual monitoring: test your top 20 keywords in Perplexity + ChatGPT
- Tools: Authoritas AI Visibility, Semrush AI Toolkit, SERanking AI Overview tracking
- Brand mentions in AI answers (Google Alerts + manual checks)
FAQ
What is AIO (AI Overview Optimisation)?
AIO is the practice of optimising content to appear in Google AI Overviews and in answers generated by LLMs such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. It relies on E-E-A-T, clear content structure and topical authority.
What is the difference between classic SEO and GEO?
Classic SEO targets rankings in traditional SERPs. GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) aims to make you the source cited by AI search engines. GEO requires content that is more structured, more authoritative and more complete than classic SEO. The good news: by optimising for GEO, you automatically improve your classic SEO as well.
How long does it take to appear in AI Overviews?
Unlike classic SEO, where you wait months, AIO content updates can take effect within 2-6 weeks. If your site already has authority in its field, restructuring existing content can produce results quickly.
