Why schema markup matters more than ever in 2026
Schema.org was created in 2011 as a shared vocabulary to help search engines understand the content of web pages. In 2026, its importance has grown for two reasons: Rich Snippets (which increase CTR by 20-30%) and AI Overviews (which use schema to identify citable content).
The most important schema types in 2026
Organisation / LocalBusiness
Essential for any business. It includes: name, address, phone number, URL, logo, social profiles, opening hours. Without it, Google cannot build an accurate Knowledge Panel for your brand.
Article / BlogPosting / NewsArticle
For editorial content. Critical fields: headline, description, author, datePublished, dateModified, mainEntityOfPage, speakable (for AI Overviews).
FAQPage
Generates a rich snippet with expandable questions and answers directly in the SERP. The easiest type to implement, with an immediately visible impact. You can use it on any page that has a frequently asked questions section.
Product
For e-commerce: include priceRange, availability, rating, review. It enables the Product rich snippet with stars, price and availability directly in the SERP.
HowTo
For step-by-step tutorials. Generates a rich snippet with the steps visible directly in the SERP, without the user having to click.
BreadcrumbList
Displays the navigation path (Home > Blog > Article) in the SERP. Standard, easy to implement, and it improves UX and CTR.
JSON-LD implementation: practical examples
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@graph": [
{
"@type": "ProfessionalService",
"@id": "https://itargetmarketing.ro/#business",
"name": "ITargetMarketing",
"url": "https://itargetmarketing.ro/",
"telephone": "+40XXXXXXXXX",
"address": {
"@type": "PostalAddress",
"addressLocality": "Cluj-Napoca",
"addressCountry": "RO"
},
"areaServed": "Romania",

},

</script>
<script type="application/ld+json">

"@type": "FAQPage",

{
"@type": "Question",
"name": "Ce este Schema Markup?",
"acceptedAnswer": {
"@type": "Answer",
"text": "Schema Markup is a standardised vocabulary (Schema.org) used to communicate the structure and context of your page content to search engines."
}
},
{
"@type": "Question",
"name": "Does Schema Markup help with ranking?",
"acceptedAnswer": {
"@type": "Answer",
"text": "Schema does not influence ranking directly, but it raises CTR through rich snippets, which indirectly improves ranking through better engagement signals."
}
}
]
}
</script>
Schema markup optimised for AI Overviews
The most important schema element for AI Overviews (and for being cited by ChatGPT/Perplexity) is speakable. Mark up the elements you want to be cited:
{
"@type": "Article",
"speakable": {
"@type": "SpeakableSpecification",
"cssSelector": [
"h1",
".article-lead", /* paragraful introductiv */
"h2",
".callout.info" /* boxele informative */
]
}
}
Use speakable to mark up the elements that contain direct, factual answers, not marketing copy. AI cites facts, definitions and statistics, not slogans. The H1 + lead paragraph + H2s are usually enough.
Testing and validating schema
- Google Rich Results Test (search.google.com/test/rich-results): tests which rich snippets your page qualifies for
- Schema Markup Validator (validator.schema.org): general Schema.org validation
- Google Search Console → Enhancements → check for implementation errors
- Bing Webmaster Tools → Schema Validator for the Bing/ChatGPT index

Does schema markup influence rankings in Google?
Not directly. Google states that schema is not a direct ranking factor. Indirectly, though, yes: rich snippets increase CTR, and a higher CTR sends positive engagement signals that influence rankings in the medium term.
Can I use multiple schema types on the same page?
Yes, and in fact it is recommended. Using @graph in JSON-LD, you can combine several schema types in a single block: Organization + BreadcrumbList + Article or FAQPage + Article. Avoid duplication: the same entity should not be defined twice.
Microdata vs. RDFa vs. JSON-LD: which should I choose?
JSON-LD. Google explicitly recommends JSON-LD over the other formats. It is easier to implement (you don’t modify the existing HTML), easier to debug and easier to update. The only exception: some WordPress plugins generate Microdata automatically; leave them be, they don’t conflict.
