Signal of the day

For the third quarter ABB reported orders of USD 12.055 billion (+40% year on year), revenue of USD 9.701 billion (+14%) and Operational EBITA of USD 2.026 billion (+24%). Reuters confirms accelerating demand for data centre solutions. Orders are neither recognised revenue nor cash collected.

The relevant analysis is not that the whole result comes from AI, but that the buyer's investment in compute propagates to equipment and physical integration. The supplier can collect on the delivery schedule before the end customer proves the AI application pays off.

Position in the chain matters more than the sector label

“We work for the AI industry” says too little about the business model. A company can sell equipment, licences, computing capacity, integration, support or data access. Each activity has a different collection schedule, capital consumption and concentration risk.

For a Romanian company, the useful question is where it can control the quality and cost of a delivery that has a budget: electrical integration, maintenance, software validation. At other times it is wiser not to enter a segment where it depends on a single platform.

Control and collaboration distribute risk differently

Merck KGaA has signed to acquire Silence Therapeutics; Lilly has entered a collaboration with METiS. The first structure seeks control of the company and its assets; the second distributes activities and payments based on progress.

The contractual questions are common to any partnership: who owns the IP, what data is accessible, which deliverable triggers payment and who bears the failure of the next stage. A commercial ecosystem needs rules before the result becomes valuable.

Circularity is monetised through an operating system

The EQT-Cleanaway deal concerns a network of collection, treatment, recycling and services, not a single technology. A facility's performance depends on supply, logistics, permitting, product specification and the buyer.

In a Romanian industrial cluster, collaboration can start with a narrow problem: a shared material flow, a testing laboratory, a hard-to-find skill or a transport cost that can be reduced.

Shared data needs shared governance

New Zealand's Total TV initiative (tvbeat and Ipsos) combines platform data with person-level research. For marketing, the implication is direct: users reported by two channels do not add up, reach is not increment, and a lead in the CRM is not yet an order.

The US order on DeepSeek also shows the risk of hidden dependencies: a restriction on one component can pass through to third-party products that use it. The supplier inventory has to go below the product's visible brand.

Decisions for the next 30 days

  1. 1. Locate revenue in the chainWho pays, for which deliverable and at what stage; capital raised, orders, revenue and cash on separate sheets.
  2. 2. Contract the shared infrastructureSpecification, data, IP, certification, maintenance and acceptance, agreed with partners before the pilot.
  3. 3. Tie marketing to feasibility and proofEvery performance promise has a comparator and a source; audience, lead, opportunity, order and margin remain separate indicators in the CRM.
